Tiling & Natural Stone Installation

At Cotswold Home Makeovers we use tiles widely throughout domestic and commercial properties. When we think about tiling, we automatically think about bathroom tiles but not only bathrooms or wet rooms can make use of floor tiles and wall tiles. We also use them in kitchens, hallways, staircases, terraces, balconies, canteens, utilities, conservatories, swimming pools  and many more.

Tiles are typically made of ceramic or natural stone but newest technologies result in rubber or glass tiles as well. The choice of size, type, shape, thickness or hardness of floor tiles or wall tiles depends on where tiles are going to be used.

In general, when we install floor tiles, we chose them thicker and harder. Wall tiles are usually smaller and quite often thinner than floor tiles. For high traffic areas, bathroom flooring, wet room flooring and swimming pools we use non slip tiles which are commonly called bathroom tiles or kitchen tiles. They secure safe grip even when flooring gets wet and that is very important factor which needs to be considered when we chose floor tiles.

There is no chance even very expensive, high quality and beautiful bathroom tiles or kitchen tiles will look great on your walls and floors if we skip preparation process. This one is such an important part of tiling. The more effort we put into substrate preparation, the better quality final effect and long lasting flooring we achieve. No matter if that is kitchen tiles or bathroom tiles installation, both floors and walls must be fully ready for receiving tiles. At Cotswold Home Makeovers we draw a lot of attention to a few important details. Floors have to be perfectly levelled and smooth. Concrete floors typically don’t require a lot of preparation when it comes to ceramic floor tiles installation, however a use of self-levelling compound might be necessary. Before installing natural stone tiles, appropriate decoupling membrane has to be used either on concrete or wooden subfloors. For installing wall tiles, walls have to be levelled and patched if there are any imperfections. Depends on the type of project we plaster walls before tiling of we plasterboard them to achieve flat, smooth and perfectly levelled surface. Using plasterboard type of preparation is required when it comes to mosaic tiles installation. We also use specific tiles adhesives and grouts depends on the type of substrate, type and size of tiles. When we install under-floor heating, we also use appropriate adhesive to secure stable, long lasting flooring.

There are choices of alternatives to plasterboard on the market when it comes to install large format wall tiles. There is a selection of insulated or cement based boards available in different sizes and thicknesses. They are much stronger than plasterboard and therefore also much better choice for large format of heavy bathroom tiles or kitchen tiles installation. They are waterproof as well so we widely use them in wet rooms or walk in showers installations combined with right type of tanking solution. We also use insulated boards on concrete floors before we install electric under-floor heating. These boards divert heat to go up into the room and heat loss is minimal then.

“Tom was exceptional in all ways. They did the interior of our house in 2016; I did not hesitate to invite them back to do the exterior in 2017 while we were away. Tom visited neighbours to say work was being done and hoped would not disturb; he and his team were polite and punctual and always cleared up each day; they liaised when windows needed to be left open; they were very tidy indoors; they came back and did all ‘touching up’ after we had hung picture and moved in furniture. They were all times super-helpful and courteous. And their work was top class professional. + fair priced!”

“I have been really impressed with this company from the outset. The quote was sent to me quickly and was very detailed so I knew exactly what to expect. The work has been completed to a really high standard and complies with the regulations for a listed building. We have had lots of comments about how smart it looks and it has really refreshed the look of the building. We had a team of men on site so it didn’t take as long as I expected and they were very polite and tidy. I’m really pleased and it’s nice to find a company that does what it promises on time!”

“Because this company had done such a good job on my old house I got them to fit a new kitchen and build an arch into the dining room. Another superb job. Just so delighted with the work and the service. Thank you Tom and team.”

“Tom’s team did a fantastic job on our bathroom which was a hell-hole before they started. Tomasz and Martin were punctual each day, very friendly and hard-working and left the place tidy at the end of each working day. I can highly recommend them.”
